First up on the list is the much needed bathroom remodel. It was pretty much straight out of the 70’s, so everything had to go. If you see it, yes that is carpet on the walls! Never understand why that was a trend, but it had to go, along with the camouflage toilet seat. Our plan was to get into the house asap in a very short time period. In order to do that we had to have a bathroom I felt comfortable using. This one was more attainable so we started here. The 70’s was when they added this bathroom and the space connected, that we are using as my studio space.
Out with the 70’s Bathroom
First up was to remove all the wall coverings. We decided to leave all the bottom wood panels, which also lined all the walls of the studio space. Of course we planned to paint them all white and that transformation is amazing. We decided to leave the sage green shower for now. It was in decent shape and I actually didn’t mind the color. As for the vanity, I had big plans for that, so the old one was going out.
My best garage sale find ever was a Wagner spray gun. Not only did it come with 1, but 2 paint guns, slightly used for like $25. I had never used one and was kinda nervous. However it seemed to be so time consuming to paint all these paneled walls of wood. Once you see how big the studio space is you will understand why I had to give it a try. I will say it was the best decision ever. I absolutely hate taping and doing the prep work, but I love how quick and good the coverage is.
This wood just soaked up the paint. I can only image how many coats and hours it would have taken to roll this on. While my mom was hand rolling other rooms in the house, I was spraying the paint on the back studio and bathroom. Just look how it is lighting up the room already. I spray primed everything first and then 2 times with white paint.
In With The New Bathroom Remodel
Time to start adding in the pretty stuff. I love the look of old dressers. You will begin to notice I don’t usually use them for the intended purpose throughout my house. I had this neat green dresser that was handed down to me from my grandparents. I knew I just had to use this as a bathroom vanity. We cut out a hole for the sink and dropped one in, my dad helped me with the plumping. My mom helped configure the “backsplash” with pieces from the mirror that went with the dresser. This was the originally color and for now we are loving it.
I had found 1 roll of this neat black and white wallpaper at a garage sale for $2. I was surprised when I got home and found out it was JoAnna Gains wallpaper costing around $85 a roll! Glad I had enough to do this one wall as an accent.
This room is super dark with no windows so I had to be creative when working on the electrical. I remembered my husbands headlight and used his trick of using that so I could be hands free. I am no electrician but taught myself basic things like switching out lights and changing outlets and switches. Taking them from that ugly yellowish to white.
The Things That Go Wrong our Bathroom Remodel
There seems to be a pattern with every project in this house. Once we get something finished for some reason or other we end up having to redo it. While I was finishing installing the wood floor in the bathroom, the old softener was replaced with a new system. Long story short, once that started working we discovered a problem. Our plumping had a problem that caused water to back up from the shower all over my new floor. I had to pull the floor up and start over.
Then after a bit of time we got some big rains and found out we had a leak. Of course it leaked on the only two spots in the house that I had wallpaper. As of right now I think we have the problem temporarily fixed. Someday I will deal with this not so beautiful ceiling. We have radiant ceiling heat, which is new to us and isn’t our favorite, but for now it is working. But it does keep me from doing what I would love to do to these ceilings.
David installed a new exhaust fan in both bathrooms and had to vent them properly. This meant he had to crawling thru the attic. A job I wouldn’t have loved, but was grateful he took it on. We added in trim, a peg board on the wall, some decor and we called this bathroom remodel good. Now we have 1 usable space to call finished. Every step gets us closer to moving in.
❤️ it!
